Chapter 10. SURPRISE!

Now it was Sam's turn to do the staring............at them both.................finally he said, "There is two men, covered in dust and spider webs, that appear to be playing chess. Sitting at a table! In this building right there? Are you saying there should only be one?"

Now it was Steve and Rose's turn to be spooked. Quickly they stuck there heads up to the broken window looking and gasping at what they saw! There was definitely two men seated at the table in front of a chess game in play.................. Steve who was sure long ago he had passed the point where anything could surprise him was thunderstruck!~~! "Alright back off both of you...........I mean it. Don't touch anything else, get your dog out of here and Rose just back away. "

Steve went to the building door and slowly eerily creaked it open. He went in taking as few a foot steps as he could and walked to the table. Heart thumping, ears straining and eyes riveted on what he hoped was another dummy............ But no, it was the body of a man. He knew the man was dead as soon as he got closer and probably not long dead. But as much as he hated to, he touched his neck for a pulse. Nothing. He had to call in Mac. There was no way this guy just walked in here sat down covered himself with cobwebs and dust and died. Not when there was just a dummy here a couple nights ago...........

Sam was thinking..........well this tears it! I keep thinking I have met my highest level of fear and then whamo!!! Something else seems to fall from the sky. I am in way over my head and I don't think I am smart enough to handle all of this. Sebastian just disappears of course and now I am going to have to stick to that stupid story about writing a novel and hope for the best......

Steve was waiting outside the building for Mac. He had already decided for once he was going to wait for Mac to do most of the talking. His full name was Trent McGuire and he was the local county sheriff. A nicer guy couldn't be found anywhere. If he had a fault, it was he gave the illusion of being slow-witted . Maybe because he was quiet. Some thought it was because he was shy but I never thought so. I think he was just lazy. Letting the other guy do all the talking.......He just always seemed to be thinking on a different level than others. He wasn't a smiler either ......Maybe it was just the way he looked at you because it never took long before you felt yourself wanting to cheer him up, the weather, sport scores, news, your life...... telling him anything you thought he might want to hear.

Mac stepped off the boardwalk and looking at Steve, said,

" I got Doc Shaffer on the way, he will be here shortly.......... Deputy Fulmer is going to take some pictures.
